Both artists come from different backgrounds in terms of cultural identity, professional training, age, language and nationality.
In the past year, they have both been creating new work at their Dovehill Studios in Glasgow, using experiences from their travel as a rich source of inspiration.

In the summer of 2007, Schmid travelled by Trans-Siberian -Mongolian-Manchurian railway to northern China. This January, she showed her work titled "Eurasian capsule" at Esther Hufschmid Gallery in Zurich.
In March 2008, MacGregor was the Artist in Residence in the Academy of Fine Art in Guiyang, China. Throughout this period, she worked with students and settlements of different Chinese ethnic minority groups in Guizhou province, southwest China. For MacGregor, it was a journey of rediscovering aspects of her Chinese heritage.

DRAWN TOGETHER

Glasgow school of Art 2009 Graduates
22nd Aug - 24th Sept
Curated by Helen Shaddock

Opening Saturday 22nd 4pm-7pm all welcome.

We are delighted to be showing some of the best work from this years graduates of Glasgow School of Art giving people another chance to see some of the fantastic talent the art school produces.
We were also delighted that Helen Shaddock found the time to freely curate the exhibition and we thank her for creating a wonderful show.

The show features a variety of different kinds of work drawn together by Helen and includes:
Alex Bowie, Alison Whitehill, Amy Joslin, Anjali Lockett, Brian Dickson, Caleb Churchill, Desmond Church, Georgina Errington, Harriet Lowther, Jenny Taylor, Julia Heslop, Julia McKinlay, Kate Brown, Kate Turbett, Katherine Gallacher, Laura Moss, Lily Johnson, Louise Lockhart, Mairi Upton, Natalie Feather, Nora Reid, Olivia Bliss, Rachel Wright, Ralph MacKenzie, Sarah Campbell, Sarah Whitehouse, Sarah Wright, Sophie Manhire, Travis Souza, Weaam Sperinck.

TIAN MILLER

SIlent Emptiness
1st June - 3rd July 2009

New Installation, textile, print and embroidery based art by norwegian artist Tian Miller, inspired by her recent residency in Trondheim Norway.
Tian uses found materials such as printed fabrics, old wallpaper retrieved from derelict buildings, and garments passed on from relatives onto which she screen prints images of her own design. The effect created is an uneasy marriage of the two images contrasting the highly stylized, decorative, found patterned fabrics with appropriated technical scientific drawings and Victorian style silhouettes.
Congratulations also to Tian who has been awarded the Dusseldorf Residency where she will take up residency in Dusseldorf, Germany in July. For the first time outside of the National Galleries group entries to the competition will be shown alongside the fifty individual award winning works in this dynamic exhibition. The National Galleries of Scotland Art Competition for Schools is supported by Scottish Widows, who are sponsoring the competition for a third consecutive year.

With a record-breaking 4,016 entries received this year, entrants faced tough competition in all six categories: nursery, primary schools (P1-3 and P4-7), secondary schools, special education schools and groups. Competition entries were based on selected NGS works, with the aim of encouraging Scottish schoolchildren to interact with and seek inspiration from works in their national collection. The competition was launched online in December 2007 when schools from all over Scotland were invited to enter. Thousands of artworks were subsequently received from places as far apart as Ballindalloch and the Borders. This will be the first stage in a two part tour for the exhibition which will move to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness later in the year.

Praising the high standard of entries this year, Linda McClelland, event organiser, said: “The standard of entries received this year has been outstanding, clearly demonstrating the creativity being nurtured in Scottish schools. I am delighted that the exhibition is to go on tour once again, making it easily accessible to the public throughout the coming year.”

Lord Leitch, Chairman of Scottish Widows, said: “This competition offers a great opportunity to encourage creativity in children and Scottish Widows is delighted to be supporting the National Galleries once again this year. With such an overwhelming response from across the country, competition for winning prizes has been tough and I would like to congratulate all the winners. I’m sure that the experience will have helped nurture the talents of these budding artists which will be appreciated by all those who visit the exhibitions as it tours Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.”

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 123px; height: 175px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__EB2PrZy34U/SRc1_7LG1nI/AAAAAAAAAN0/o9HuJNOIy-c/s400/bird.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266737661565392498" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 304px; height: 61px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__EB2PrZy34U/SRc2IrcM58I/AAAAAAAAAN8/KiK3JauwzN0/s400/scot+wid.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266737811960948674" />

GORDON PICKEN

New Paintings
6th Oct - 7thNov

Although a figurative artist, this exhibition of new work by Gordon Picken has him depicting buildings in the urban landscape. His out buildings, shacks, apartment blocks and pavilions are weathered and scarred by the vagaries of life. The passage of time is apparent in them. At first the buildings appear banal but the artist here imbues them with symbolic significance.

There are no human figures in this series but their influence is there throughout. Having been drawn to these buildings, the artist has come to see them as something akin to "ready made " monuments. For him, they become metaphors, not just for social themes, but personal and artistic themes too.

In the process of painting this work the artist has become aware of the paradox of paint as illusion and actuality. By depicting markings, designs and paint surfaces made by others, he's had to confront the problem of "a painting within a painting". For instance, to portray the graffiti in these pictures he found the only solution was to actually mimic it in paint himself.

For Gordon each individual panel is a fragment of time and all of these paintings can be assembled and viewed as built pieces.

<img style="cursor:pointer; The forgotten, then remembered, then forgotten again. Glasgow as a ghost story, the past haunting the present.
"An explosion of fractured memory. An attempt to shock the subconscious and explore the fragments of the past that shape the mind. My work is an effort to capture the moments when we both escape and confront reality simultaneously. To present the evolution of time; relics that produce nostalgia and still remain, yet which provoke a different emotional reaction and and transport the mind to a peculiar place. to both live and not live; to exist in the dreams of others and explain their history in an image... this is what I do."

Paul graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2004, is currently employed working as a community artist in Glasgow and is a member of the Glasgow Print Studio and Wasps Studios Glasgow.

Previous Show "Working Drawing": 18 January - 9 March 2007

This exhibition explores drawing in a broad context, showing work from the breadth of Glasgow’s artistic community and the fringe places where it meets the commercial world and definitions are often blurred.

The exhibition includes contributions from artists working in the Hope St. Studios, Southside Studios and Wasps Studios, in addition to a variety of other artists.

The artists showing are as follows:
Mark Campbell, Christina Corfield, Lisa Donnan, J.R.
